Pukehāngi development

To all members of Ngāti Kea Ngāti Tuara – Your input is needed. Do you know any stories, or have you heard your parents or grandparents tell any stories about our tupuna living in the Pukehāngi and Tihi-o-Tonga area?

The Rotorua Lakes Council is planning a subdivision development to the south west of Pukehāngi Road. Our tupuna lived in the Tihi-o-Tonga and Pukehāngi area for several hundred years and we have many sites of significant historical, spiritual and cultural importance there. Most of the land was acquired by the Crown and on-sold in the early years of the nineteenth century.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Kea Ngāti Tuara has been engaged to write a report on the possible cultural impact that a proposed subdivision by a private developer would have.

If you know any stories, heard your parents or grandparents tell any stories, or have any information about our tupuna living in the Pukehangi and Tihi-o-Tonga area please contact Robyn Bargh at Robyn.bargh@huia.co.nz.
